I’m sure we all wish money actually grew from every tree we’ve planted, but unfortunately that is not possible. Let’s be honest, saving money can be hard. But what’s even harder is finding ways to spend money on a budget. It’s as if you wanted to eat the whole candy bar, but you had to find control to resist temptation and eat only half of the candy bar. What madness!!
Here are a few ways from my personal experiences I’ve been able to spend money while on a budget:
For starters, you need to stop the unnecessary shopping. Remember the difference between needs and wants. I can’t tell you how many times I go grocery shopping for one thing, and instead I ended up buying basically the whole store and forgot that one thing I needed. Guilty as charged! In fact, write a list of things you need when you know you need to shop.
Create a financial spread sheet of your spendings. Try to be as detailed as you can. Include everything, not to mention it would be a good form to have when you have to file your taxes.
Use Coupons, promo codes, online sales, and food stamps. Basically try to find any deals that’ll be to your benefit. This goes too for Black Friday, Cyber Monday or huge Amazon deals. Every cent counts, don’t be ashamed of it. It also helps if you organize coupons into a small box so you can keep track.
Pay with cash instead of a debit card when it comes to your daily expenses. If you use cash then you’ll be more aware of how much money you are actually spending while on a budget. Also you won’t see that much of a difference in your bank account if you use cash the majority of the time.
Be smart with gas purchase. Find a practical cheep gas pump. There are many apps out there, one I use is called GasBudy. The app uses your location and shows you how much each gas station is around you. It’s very easy to use. Gas money gets spent frequently, this is a big spending to think about.
Switch your memberships. If you’re spending more money at Orange Theory, LA Fitness, Crossfit, etc. Then think about scaling it down to cheaper gyms; for instance, Planet Fitness, or simply running outside. I’m talking about every membership you have, not just your gym one. For example, Disney, or expensive class memberships.
Switch your electronic service providers. Regardless if you choose Comcast, AT&T, cable vs no cable… just change to any service that works best for you, and economical to lower your spending cost. One of the switches I personally made was cut off my cable service and just have internet using Comcast Xfinity.
Afterwards, I got the Fire TV Stick with 3 months of Freetime Unlimited. I assure it has not disappointed. With the Fire TV Stick I’ve been able to download countless of apps and watch my TV shows using it. The Fire Stick has never given me issues, it’s very reliable. Definitely made sense for me personally cut off cable as one of the ways to spend money while on a budget.
Financial Spread Sheet
When you are on a budget you have to consider every category. Categories being:
Adjusting your thermostat so that you are not paying as much in heating and cooling costs. Is you car payment/insurance too much? Finding a cheaper place to live in, maybe consider a roommate? You might even have to make some sacrifices to your standards.
Do you really need to go to the nail salon instead of just painting your own nails? Do you even need a gym membership at all when there are a ton of home workout plans? Need cable when these days you can watch any show with internet?
In your financial spread sheet, figure out what you can realistically cut down on and it’ll help you save money towards your savings or emergency funds.
If you practice these ways to spend money while on a budget you will be a person who earns money and manages to hang onto it by spending less than you make. You probably don’t need to cut down on everything, but rather just a little bit. You’ll be surprised what a small difference will make.
