Colombia has the most beautiful sceneries, rooted cultural heritage, and many friendly inhabitants.
If you have been looking for a place to relax, have an adventure, and explore the wild, then Filandia, Colombia is the best place to consider. In general, Colombia has among the best sightseeing locations to have a cultural experience.
The diversity of the ecosystem provide outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, and exploration.
Filandia is a town in Colombia under the department of Quindio. It is still a small growing town with well-developed buildings. The population is relatively low but there are still many of hotels, restaurants and attraction sites to visit. It is famous for its agriculture and tourism economy. Filandia is a significant tourist destination spot, and in fact, one of the most attractive towns in Quindio.
Telenovela enthusiasts are usually thrilled by Filandia, and popular films are shot here because the town’s main square has a “love mood.” If you are lucky enough, you can get a chance to see scenes of these Telenovelas being shot on the streets.
Here is a complete list of the best things to do.
The Colombian coffee has high demands in the US and Europe. It is its own precious gold. With the high demand, getting the tastiest coffee should be difficult in other parts of the country. However, Filandia has the tastiest coffee in Colombia.
The best coffee serving shops that occasionally offer tasting include, Cultivar Café, MOCAFE, and Dulcinea Café Bar.
If you are looking for coffee farms, I would suggest visiting two of the most popular ones, the Don Eduardo and Finca EL Mirador Coffee farms. The local farms gives a personal affiliation with the locals. You will learn about coffee farming and processing.
Hiking is a healthy physical activity that benefits the body and mind. While in Filandia, please do not miss to explore the double-water fall or the doble cascada (as known by the locals). There is a private land located is about 40 minutes’ walk where you can see waterfalls and hike through the lush green forest. The land owners are friendly and allow anyone in who is willing to explore the area.
On a good day, you can enjoy the birds humming and colorful bright butterflies. It’s also an ideal time to go for a swim on the clean river.
The dirt tracks in between forest are perfect for cycling. Away from the busy town, you can enjoy the silence and humming of birds.
Cycling downhill is easier than cycling uphill. But if you do not prefer to cycle, the Jeeps from Quimbaya to Salento are great alternatives. It’s only 10 minutes away.
Tourists rent bicycles around Colina de la Lluvia and Bidea hostel. These bikes are cheap and come with an additional map for the tracks.
Finca Aprisco La Espanola is home to the great goat farmer and local priest. If you request prior, the family will prepare an antioquia feast for you (this is a delicious traditional-cooked meal that includes rice, salad, roasted chicken served with plantains, sancocho soup, and avacados).
The locals will also show you around and even serve you desert of their tasty goat cheese with a slice of straight from the oven bread.
Museums and Landmarks
Musea del Disco y la Musica
Musea del Disco la Musica is officially where the history of Colombian coffee processing is taught. These lectures include an authentic and decent coffee and an in-depth history of the farms in Filandia.
Central de Interpretacion Bejuco Al Canasto
This is a specialty museum where local young guides are friendly and willing to teach tourists about the ancient Colombian traditional crafts. It is an interesting point of interest to learn how to make beautiful baskets.
These baskets are usually made of local materials found in Filandia. There are different types of baskets made that teach about the history of Filandia.
Where to get delicious food and drinks
I’m sure if you are in Filandia and do not taste some traditional local meals, your trip will not be fulfilled.
Helena Adentro is one of the best restaurant that serve local meals with a twist of modernity. The owner cultivates and harvest fresh produce to prepare 100% natural ingredient meals.
Earlier, they used to open their doors on weekends alone because they worked on their farms during the week. However, today, they open throughout because of the high demand.
I’m not kidding, I LOVE this place. Must try it.
If you want to have decent coffee, then you should visit the Cultivar café, northwest of the town. The Café has a great view of the green fields. If you also want to relax after a long day and sip the hot coffee as you look at the beautiful view of coffee hills, then this is the right spot for you.
Although a bit expensive, this is the best place to take your coffee.
The obvious evident of ever visiting a place is to return home with a souvenir.
Alight, if I had to pick a favorite shopping spot, it would be Pueblo Indio. The customer service was nothing short but amazing. My dad, sister & I probably spent a good 3 hours there just learning about the Inca culture, what they sold, what certain dream catchers meant, what the crystal were used for, etc.
On top of that, they offered us chicha (pictured below), which was my first time trying and it wasn’t bad at all. Chicha is known as one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in South America. It is a fermented beverage, commonly using corn and/or other grains and roots such as quinoa or yuca. Commonly made in people’s homes.
Needless to say, The hospitality was wonderful and I will never forget them, or the experience. Definitely plan on visiting them again.
